The latest: driver upper and lower control arms, passenger tie rod, and new sway bar bushings. $194 in parts (I’m actually pretty sure I couldn’t have gotten those parts cheaper myself, so I’m pretty pleased with that) and $400 for alignment and labor.
Add to that a new hub assembly and new shocks previously.
I can’t really complain though. I have put 30k on it since buying it and I don’t know if or when the PO last did any of this.
On the plus side, the car is now back to the perfect Jaguar voodoo combination of buttery smooth ride with unnaturally firm handling.

So the car can be aligned and hold an alignment?

$8600 in 14 months.
Get on my level.

Up until about a week ago, it hadn’t had the slightest misalignment in almost two years of owning it. It’s actually unnatural how well that car holds an alignment.

Daaaaaaaaaamn. Thank you for validating my fear of Mercedes ownership.

If I've learned anything from this, it's that I'm never ever buying an S-Class.

Well at least you take care of it.

I won’t join this contest since engine-out service is not fair. But I did have a B5 Passat that I sank $2.5k into for a new front end, and then the engine died for reasons that I did not want to pay more money to explore. The worst $2.5k I have ever spent. I still hate VW.

How close are you to running out of stuff to replace?

Jesus, and I’m hoping to get my X308 by for a year on a $30 coil pack and maybe an oil change...

So worth it though...

In all fairness, everything but the hub assembly was probably well overdue to be replaced.
I’m almost positive that the hub assembly damage was the result of a blowout that the previous owner had. This is what I discovered when I pulled the spare from the trunk:

Ouch.
Well, if it makes you feel any better, I just picked up a 15 yr old Audi with a blown engine and questionable air suspension, so just take solace in the fact that others are sharing your pain.

I was thinking on my drive home that I probably should have just bitten the bullet and had the passenger control arms replaced.

My other car is a Town Car and and experience with regular air suspension replacement was part of what originally drove me to the X308 instead of its X350 successor.

Money spent on suspension maintenance parts is never wasted, in my opinion. It makes cars ride so much nicer, and safer.
Even if you sell it, it’s good car karma knowing a heap of crap isn’t rolling down the road about to swerve into oncoming traffic.

I... I haven’t even spent 1500 on my pickup in five years. And that includes the initial purchase!

On the plus side, OEM wheels are super cheap used.

I have lost count of the cost of my E46 this year. The dealer is trying to get me to shell out for a $700 secondary air pump replacement and I’m not digging it.
